PROMOTING CACFP—AS AN ECONOMIC STIMULUS

As the recession continues, some state legislatures and governments have cut back on services. A better strategy is to maximize the use of federal funds both to meet people’s needs and bolster the local economy. Expanding CACFP should be a part of these plans. This is an opportunity for sponsors to share what they know about how well CACFP works for providers and children, and emphasize the program’s role as a key economic support for child care. It is important for governors and legislators to realize that CACFP is 100 percent federally funded. Expansion of CACFP is a winning proposition for state governments during difficult economic times: it increases revenues available to the state and simultaneously increases services to constituents.

Taking Action

Now is the time to reach out and offer to work with your Governor, state legislators, policy makers, and state agency directors to support the local economy by expanding CACFP participation and bringing federal CACFP dollars into the state. You can reach out through your state CACFP association or through your own sponsorship.
